E-mail spoofing

E-mail spoofing is the practice of changing an individual or company name in an e-mail so that it looks like the e-mail came from someone or somewhere else.

Spoofing is generally used by spammers as a first defense against people finding out who they are. It's also used by disgruntled individuals to practice mischievous and malicious acts.

If you are notified by a friend or someone in your address list that you are sending them e-mails with or without viruses and you know that you did not send it, someone may have spoofed your e-mail account. Also, if there are delivery failure notices in your in-box someone has spoofed your account but it was caught by the e-mail system of the person it was trying to send to. If you receive or know of others receiving these kinds of e-mails, just delete them. Do not click on any attachments as they may contain viruses.
