J5 Information:

  • The Medicare Jurisdiction 5 A/B MAC transition will complete on February 29, 2008.  The cut off for processing of the EDI Setup and Change of Information was 4:30 p.m. CT, February 15, 2008.  EDI Setup and Change of Information forms not completed by 4:30 p.m. CT, February 15, 2008 will be submitted to WPS Medicare for completion.   
  • All Medicare electronic claims transaction submitted to the EDI Front End must be completed by February 28, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. central time. Claims submitted after this time will be rejected by the EDI Front End with edit code: 3001 unable to determine route. Claims receiving this rejection need to be submitted directly to WPS Medicare after March 1, 2008.    
  • We ask and urge all Trading Partners to submit all claims transitions well in advance of the February 28, 2008 2:00 p.m. CT cut off time.  By submitting well in advance of this date and time Trading Partners lessen the risk of claims rejecting. 
  • CMS has issued a dark day of February 29, 2008.  A dark day means BCBSKS Medicare is closed for business.
  • Remittance advices and MCS EDI Edit reports (H99RAR04) will continue to be delivered as scheduled to Trading Partner mailboxes until the transition date of March 1, 2008.
  • Remittance advices and reports will remain in your Trading Partner mailbox for 30 days.
  • WPS Medicare has announced three WPS Medicare EDI Ask the Contractor calls.

  • If you or your clients use the free PC-ACE Pro32 software, you will be able to continue to use the BCBSKS version.  A service pack was made available to users on January 29, 2008. Users of PC-ACE Pro32 were notified of its availability.  The current version of PC-ACE Pro32 software issued by BCBSKS is 1.90.
  • All BCBSKS Medicare clients that have a Trading Partner number will need to apply for a WPS Medicare submitter number as soon as possible.  
  • BCBSKS and ASK will continue to accept claims for all payers except Medicare after February 29, 2008.  Payers include BCBSKS, BCBSKC, HealthNow NY, PHP and EDI Midwest Commercial Claims Clearinghouse. 

Questions and Answers:

  • We understand we can continue to use the PC-ACE Pro32 software provided by BCBSKS.  Do we have to have a dial up modem?
    A.        Several connectivity options are available for WPS Medicare. Connectivity information is posted at http://www.wpsic.com/edi/med_macj5.shtml connecting through a Network Service Vendor such as
    VisionShare – http://www.visionshareinc.com/        or 
    Ivans - http://www.ivans.com/custom_marketing.asp?secname=30
    another option is connecting to the WPS Medicare Bulletin Board system through HyperTerminal.  Please visit the WPS Medicare web site for all connectivity options. 

General Announcements

  • NPI is now required on all EDI Enrollment forms.  Forms are available at: http://www.ask-edi.com/forms.htm.  Please take a moment to update your forms for your clients.  This speeds the setup for electronic transactions.

NPI Information

  • BCBSKS:
    • 837 Transactions (Claims) – Accepts NPI only, Dual Use. Trading partners wanting to send NPI only must notify BCBSKS first.
    • NPI is required on all claims submitted January 1, 2008.
    • Edit B383 rejects claims, as of January 1, 2008, when an NPI is not submitted in the billing provider loop.
    • Legacy only is no longer accepted, January 1, 2008.
  • BCBSKC:
    • 837 Transactions (Claims) – Accepts NPI only, Dual Use, or Legacy only.
    • 835 Transactions (Remits) – If the NPI has been reported to the payer, trading partners will receive both legacy and NPI on all 835 transactions.
  • Medicare A:

  • Medicare B:
    • 837 Transactions (Claims) – Accepts NPI only, Dual Use.
    • March 1, 2008, claims submitted with legacy only provider number will reject on the MCS EDI Edit Reports (H99RAR04). NPI will be required. This date coincides with the J5 transition to WPS.
    • January 7, 2008 Medicare B implemented "informational" edits for claims containing a legacy identifier at the 2310A, 2310C, 2310D and 2310E loop. These informational edits will reject May 23, 2008.
    • CMS is urging the submission of NPI as soon as possible on all electronic transaction.

  • We can't express enough how important it is to have everyone reading reports for rejections and warnings.

System Updates

  • The next routine system deployment is scheduled for April 6, 2008.
